Sacred Spaces and Smart Systems: AI Literacy in Year 4 RE
In Year 4 RE, pupils identify religious symbols and sacred architecture, providing a perfect opportunity to explore how AI systems are trained to classify these same cultural markers.
- A computer doesn't understand meaning or sacredness; it only sees shapes and pixels. When an AI identifies a Star and Crescent, it is matching a shape to a label it was given by a human.
- For an AI to be respectful and inclusive, it needs to be trained on diverse data. If we only show an AI photos of steeples, it might fail to recognise a house church as a sacred space.
- Human oversight is essential to ensure technology reflects the diversity of the real world.
- Pattern: a design or sequence that repeats, which computers use to recognise symbols.
- Classification: sorting things into groups based on what they look like.
- Training data: the collection of examples (like photos of crosses or murtis) that we show an AI so it can learn.
